Token Records present Aphelion [Token048]

2007 was a strange year for techno. Dancefloors worldwide were hooked by the minimal craze, vinyl sales were in a massive slump, Europe was gripped by widespread recession and Berghain was relatively unknown to those outside of Berlin. With this in mind, if someone told you they were going to start a record label, and press on vinyl, you'd probably have told them that they'd be mad to do so. But Kr!z, driven by a need for an artistic outlet, had other ideas.

Armed with tracks from Inigo Kennedy, Sub Space, Ø Phase and Radial, he pitched his stall and made his statement of a new darker direction that techno could take. Token Records was born and the result was music made for dark basements rather than huge arena's hired by promoter with bottomless production budgets. As the years have rolled by releases from Inigo Kennedy and Ø Phase have continued and spattered amongst them has been EPs from the likes of Oscar Mulero, Go Hiyama, Xhin, Mark Broom and Eschaton as well as the roster additions of Ctrls and Rødhåd, which have been received with critical acclaim from all corners of the techno world and has helped cement the labels position at the forefront of our ever enhancing scene.

As we reach the present day, Token Records present us with 'Aphelion' to serve as a celebration of their achievements to date and as a prelude to what the future looks like for the Belgium imprint. Collecting together label mainstays, techno legends and bright new stars was only going to end in something spectacular, covering the expansive tapestry of sounds that make up what we class as techno. There's no warm up as we're thrown straight into what seems like the Army Ants march to war with Ø Phase's 'Insectoid'. Lucy drops the pace with 'Sana Sana Sana Cura Cura Cura' and his subtle use of modular rhythms before Ctrls ups the ante with the frantic progression of 'X.Y.'

Rødhåd continues the heady vibe with 'Haumea' and it's trippy synth patterns that intertwine with each other in oscillating waves and slowly enslave your subconscious. 'The 808 Track (Parts 1 & 2)', from Luke Slater's Planetary Assault Systems alias, makes tremendous use of the classic 808 sounds that have been a staple of techno since it's inception. The UK techno legend run continues as James Ruskin utilises almost playful, infectiously jacking programming on 'No Trace' and Surgeon showcases his heavily distorted industrial sound on 'Fixed Action Pattern'.

Inigo Kennedy, no less of a UK techno legend himself, mixes heavy kicks and aggressive percussion with emotive lead lines for those late night transcendent moments. Not wanting to go out on a whimper, they've rounded off with one of the most exciting additions to UK techno in the shape of Blawan and Pariah's double act, Karenn, and their 'Pace Yourself' which does anything but. Stabs drenched in reverb overlay gothic bells which perch delicately on top of a relentless 4/4 kick drum to leave you craving more when you reach the final curtain.

If this album is to be a statement of everything that Token Records embodies, then they're definitely going with the attitude of put your strongest foot forward. And what results is a structurally sound fortress of techno that could withstand anything nature, or man, could throw at it. It's solid as the day is long and bound together with quality from every junction. The journey to this point has been a very fruitful one for Token and the future is one that should be observed very closely.

If you're still not sold on whether you should buy this from our words alone, you can stream the full album from the Soundcloud player below. You can buy the Triple Vinyl + CD pack now from Juno as well as all your other esteemed outlets. For more info on Token Records, head over to their Facebook Fan Page

#.19.21.3.11.21.20 [HG015]

In a sea of mystery artists and secret projects, Horizontal Ground stand out head and shoulders above most. A collection of artists with IP address style names assigned to them alongside some of techno's emerging stars. AnD, Skirt, Samuel Kerridge, Szare and Monica Hits the Ground have been thrown into the pot with our previous guest and podcaster, 194.454.18.5.24.5.18 as well as 19.26.1.18.5.

The 15th release on the imprint comes from a new face, well name, #19.21.3.11.21.20. Three tracks of dark techno is the outcome. A1 comes with a powerful marauding bass and shattering percussion. B1 nods your head with it's metronome like clicks and effects whilst B2 heads back to the dancefloor with it's ever evolving synth lines.

Expect to see the release in the shops by the end of this week, but don't hang about because these vinyl only releases are normally limited in numbers. You can pre order your copy on the ReadyMade Website

Sawlin & Subjected - Foreign Awake Part 1 [EDLX.033]

Sawlin & Subjected are two artists that have burrowed their way through the Berlin undergrowth and now the word is spreading far and wide. As two thirds of the three part collective (with Mørbeck), named Vault Series, they've been making bold statements in the techno world through a practically faceless, unhyped approach. Letting their thunderous, post apocalyptic manifestations lead the way to the wider audience rather than using PR and marketing.

It's these heavyweight outings that have caught the attention of Speedy J and prompted him to commission a two part EP for his Electric Deluxe label. The first EP, 'Foreign Awake Part 1', features three tracks from the duo. The EP begins with 'Texture 3', a dark expanse of swarming bass topped with unnerving reverbed bells. 'Texture 4' hits you like an instant slug to the head as it's heavy distorted kicks force you to sit up and take notice. The EP finishes with 'Texture 2'. A slower, but by no means, lesser impact. The kick fires at you with a deliberateness that focuses your mind, whilst frequencies scurry around your feet, like insects, upsetting your sense of calm.

Check out the EP from the Soundcloud player below

The release will hit the shops in the not too distant future so keep an eye out for that. More information on the artists can be found via their Facebook Fan Pages, Sawlin and Subjected and while you're at it don't forget the Electric Deluxe Fan Page.

If you want to catch the pair performing live, you can do so this weekend at the Electric Deluxe ADE special on Saturday alongside the likes of DVS1, Lucy, ROD and of course Speedy J. Full event info can be found on the ADE Website

Concrete Fence - New Release (1) [Pan 39]

Concrete Fence is the collaboration of two true pioneers, Karl O'Conner (his work as part of British Murder Boys, Sandwell District, or on his own as Regis and of course his legendary label Downwards, has made him one of the key figures in the development of UK techno for the last 20 something years) and Russell Haswell (a conceptual artist who specialises in extreme computer music and audio visual installations).

The act first hit our consciousness when they debuted the live show at Corsica Studios last October. The question we've been asking ourselves ever since, will there be anything released, has finally been answered as 'New Release (1)' is soon to hit the stores care of Pan Records.

The EP comprises of 3 tracks. 'Industrial Disease' has the hallmarks of O'Conner's recent work. When combined with Haswell's love for noises from the realm of the obscure, it creates a masterpiece of experimental techno. 'Caulk' hums at you like a giant industrial demon whilst percussion echos all around before it's very matter destabilises and breaks down before your very eyes. 'The Unabridged Truth' takes on a 4/4 format and almost acts as a middle ground between the previous two and stands out as the more 'dancefloor friendly' portion of the release.

Check out the 'Industrial Disease' below.

The EP is due for release at the end of August. More info can be found on the Pan Records Website

Oscar Mulero - Transversal EP (Truncate & Sleeparchive Remixes) [Modularz 11]

American based record label, Modularz, have found their way on to their 11th release since it's conception in 2006. The imprint, which has already seen the likes of Developer, Silent Servant, Jeroen Search, Shifted, Stanislav Tolkachev, Jonas Kopp and more, invited Spanish based producer Oscar Mulero to join their ever increasing family.

The end result is the Transversal EP. Two original tracks from Mulero and two remixes, one from Truncate and one from Sleeparchive. The EP kicks off with the original of 'Rótula'. Metallic percussion overlays trembling basslines and stuttering delayed stabs. Truncate's version of 'Rótula' takes a more stripped down, slightly sedated approach whilst still maintaining the originals intensity. The B Side sees Mulero continue the same theme with 'Transversal'. High energy and hypnotic rhythms oscillate amongst each other. Finally Sleeparchive's take on 'Transversal' rounds of the release perfectly with typical Germanic precision engineering. Check out the samples from the soundcloud player below

The EP will be available on both vinyl and digital in June. More info on Oscar Mulero can be found on his Facebook Fan Page. For Modularz, head to their Website and back to Facebook for Truncate and Sleeparchive. If you want to catch Oscar Mulero performing live he'll be in Germany tomorrow and Poland on Saturday. A full list of his gigs can be found on his Resident Advisor Page

Stefan Gubatz - Distanz Varianz (Telrae 015 V)

On of our favourite labels, Telrae, is on too their 15th 10" vinyl release and it's a 4th on the label from Stefan Gubartz. Fresh from the release of his debut album 'Distanz' (available direct from the Telrae webshop) on the imprint late last year Stefan uses 015 as an opportunity to revisit and rework two tracks from the album.

'Byte and Scratch' entertains and enthralls with wave after wave reverb'd chords and a spattering of high hats. On the B Side we find 'Offshore' and a slightly more muted affair. Again blissful chords provide an altogether calming yet uplifting influence. It's one of those records you want to listen to in a dark room, all alone with your thoughts.

Check out the samples from the soundcloud player below

As with all Telrae releases it's available exclusively from Decks.de and should be in the store soon. More info on Stefan Gubatz can be found on his Facebook Fan Page and the same goes for Telrae or alternatively you can head over to their website for info on all their previous releases.

Berghain 06: Norman Nodge

The latest Berghain compilation CD hit the stores yesterday, and it's mixed by our favourite techno lawyer, Norman Nodge. Now on to it's sixth edition, after previous escapades from Andre Galluzi, Marcel Dettmann, Len Faki, Ben Klock and Marcel Fengler, the Berlin nightspot continues to dip into their extensive list of residents to showcase the music that's built the club's legendary reputation for the worlds very best techno.

As you may expect, Nodge's signature stamp of quality is plastered all over the mix from start to finish. From it's ambient beginnings, with the help of Birds Two Cage, Oni Ayhun and an artist we're big fans of here at SDD, Mokira, the mix steadily builds in energy, drifting it's way through the expansive sounds of Detroit, Berlin and UK techno. Combining classic tracks like Jeff Mills' 'Keeping Of The Kept' with new faces to the scene like Patrick Gräser and recent SDD podcaster, Charlton. The mix, recorded live at Berghain, completes a full circle as tracks from El Gato#9, Radioactive Man and Xosar return the listener to the comp's more blissful beginnings.

Tracklisting

1) Birds Two Cage - Gase
2) Oni Ayhun - OAR002-B
3) Mokira - Manupulation Music (Redshape Tape Dub)
4) Patrick Gräser - From Foreign Territories
5) Hauntologists - Untitled
6) Staffan Linzatti - Morning
7) Jeff Mills - Keeping Of The Kept
8) Silent Servant - Untitled
9) DJ T - 1000 - Metra
10) The Nighttripper - Tone Exploitation (Planetary Assault Systems Remix)
11) Charlton - Black Slong
12) Architectural - Looking Ahead
13) Mark Broom - Vault 5

17) El Gato#9 - Coefficient Of Friction (Monty Luke Back Catalogue Remix)
18) Radioactive Man - Nasty Radio
19) Xosar - Rainy Day Juno Jam (Legowelt Remix)

As with all Berghain, and Panoramabar CDs, this mix contains a number of exclusive unreleased tracks. In the case of 06 it's three, from Birds Two Cage, Patrick Gräser and Mark Broom. Thankfully for those of you DJs out there, these three tracks don't stay unreleased for very long as they all feature on the companion vinyl. Samples of which can be found on the soundcloud player below

Comprising of tough basslines, furious percussion, piercing stabs, industrial overtones and drifting melodies.Tthere's a dancefloor weapon for all occasions. Check out the samples below

Truss - Ganymede [Perc Trax 055]

It's time for a new release from our favourite London based label, Perc Trax, by one of our previous Slash Dot Dash guests, Truss. It's first appearance on the label from the Welsh born, London based producer since his 2010 'Osbasten' EP. Inbetween he's had great success, most notably, with his EP on Sigha's Our Circula Sound label as well as remixes for Perc (with Sigha) and the debut release for our friends over at EarToGround.

'Ganymede' displays just how far Truss has come since his last Perc Trax EP. Using his extensive knowledge of the history of techno to combine that with modern methods and idealism's to create something fresh and original. The title track is a minimalist bass heavy thumper which encompasses Truss signature acid stylings. His second offering 'Hackney' is an uncompromising throw back to the illegal East London raves. Stripped down to it's bare bones, it's acid rhythms provide an accurate representation of the state of UK techno.

Remixes come from label boss, Perc, and rising techno star, with labels like Horizontal Ground and Semantica, Skirt. On 'Ganymede' Perc adds layers of organic percussion where as skirt takes us on a more deeper atmospheric trip. Check out the samples below

Truss - Ganymede (Perc Trax) - preview by Perc

The vinyl will be in the shops on the 14th September and will be available digitally (with a bonus Perc Dub Mix of 'Ganymede') two weeks later on the 28th September. More info on Perc Trax can be found on their Facebook Fan Page. Or those of you Twitter can follow Perc Trax Here and Truss Here

Milton Bradley - Reality Is Wrong [Prologue 027]

Milton Bradley returns for his second release on Prologue Records. After providing remixes for Cio D'Or's 'Die Faser' and 'Magnetfluss' as well as his own 'The Unheard Voice From Outer Space' EP, Milton provides 3 tracks for Prologue's 27th release.

The A side features 'Reality Is Wrong'. Full of Bradley's distinct experimental dark drones. Side B consists of 'The Unbearable Lightness' and 'Trapped In Eternity' and displays the other side to Milton Bradley. Raw, stripped back, energetic techno as he combines an old skool stlye with his modern approach on the production of techno. Check out the samples below

Pär Grindvik - Wyatt ARP [Stockholm LTD 024]

Pär Grindvik drops his first release on Stockholm LTD for four years. These are his reasons for this hiatus and the thought process behind the new EP...

"It’s been four years since my last own EP on Stockholm LTD.
The main reason for this is that I have been surrounded by music that has inspired
me much more than my own.
This EP was written and produced with strict narrow frames and a huge amount
of frustration. I was tired of waiting for the inspiration to kick in, then suddenly it
appeared with a strength that I haven’t felt for long time. I’m now curious for more.
While sketching the title track, ’Wyatt Arp’, I couldn’t get Detroit legend, Terrence
Dixon, out of my mind. Terrence is a long time hero of mine, and an artist that always
stays on the true side of what we do while most of us occasionally leave our paths.
I had to ask him to do a rework."

Check out the samples on the Soundcloud player below

Pär Grindvik - Wyatt ARP - STHLM LTD 024 by Stockholm LTD

The EP will be in the shops towards the back end of August so make sure you get yourselves a copy. More information on Pär can be found on his Facebook Fan Page.

Yuka & Stanislav Tolkachev - Little Chemistry [Fullpanda 019]

Fullpanda Records 19th release is a split EP featuring two works from Yuka and two from Stanislav Tolkachev. The talented pair had a very tough act to follow after the mesmerising FP018, 'Lostbanhoff' from Dasha Rush and Lars Hemmerling, aka Lada, but have managed to pull it off with some aplomb.

Yuka takes charge of the A Side whilst Stanislav has the B. 'Element X' utilises ever growing waves of intensity with frantic percussion to deliver the most euphoric of techno moments. 'Chlorum' is chopped full of drones programmed with the most clinical of approaches. Stanislav Tolkachev's B Side begins with 'Self-Renewal', a sedated acid number, whilst 'Hexapoda' is moulded in Detroit stylings, with a touch of Jeff Mills' Something In The Sky project about it. The Ukrainian producer mixes fluttering rhythms with solid kicks to assemble a never ending peak time adventure.

Check out the samples through the soundcloud player below

FP019 "Little chemistry" by Yuka and Stanislav Tolkachev by FULLPANDA RECORDS

The release should be in all good records shops in the next 3 weeks. More info on Fullpanda Records can be found on their Facebook Fan Page or on Fullpanda.com

Video: The 29 Nov Films, Mørbeck - Morbius [Candela Rising]

We don't know a lot about The 29 Nov Films except that they're an independent organisation that makes incredible videos for EDM music. You just need to scan through the videos on their Youtube Channel to see their works on tracks by Monolake, Planetary Assault Systems, Henning Baer, Shed, Rrose, Pattern Repeat, Shifted, Samuli Kemppi and many many more SDD favourites, the list is literally endless.

For the video in question they set to work on a piece by Berlin DJ / Producer, Vault Series collaborator (with Subjected) and member of the Grounded Theory stable, Mørbeck. 'Morbius' comes from the 'Magneto' EP on the new London based, vinyl only label, and brainchild of past SDD guest Billy Allen, Candela Rising.

The video (probably The 29 Nov Films' most twisted video, that we've seen) acts as a perfect accompaniment to Mørbeck's intensely hypnotic composition. Drawing you in as disturbed visuals intertwine with rumbling basslines, drifting bells and sharp hi hats to leave you feeling entirely removed from your comfortable surroundings, and very much trapped inside that house, part of the little psychopathic girls' world of demented homicidal activities.

The EP will be available to buy in the next couple of weeks. You can get an e-mail from Juno, letting you know when it's ready to buy, now. Mørbeck has contributed 3 original pieces and Jeroen Search offers up an interpretation of 'Mystique'. Check out the samples below

Get yourselves over to the Candela Rising Facebook Page, and 'like it', to keep informed of all of the labels movements. And be sure to subscribe to The 29 Nov Films' Youtube Channel to see all of their new videos.

Cio D'Or - Ur / Uhr [Telrae 011]

The 11th release from Köln based record label, Telrae, is something to get us very excited as they invited Cio D'Or to provide two expertly crafted pieces to make up her first release for the label.

Full of emotion and the most acute spacial awareness, 'Ur' and 'Uhr' have all the hallmarks of Cio's work.  Ghostly echo's and subtle drones lead you along a spooky path of musical enlightenment. Regular Telrae contributor, Salz, provides a remix of 'Ur' and toughens up the beats to make it a bit more dancefloor friendly. Check out the videos of the three tracks below

The EP will be available on vinyl at the end of the month, exclusively at Decks.de, which features the two original pieces. You can also get it on digital download from iTunes where you'll be able to get hold of the Salz remix too.

More information on Telrae can be found on their Facebook Fan Page and the same goes for Cio D'Or

Samuli Kemppi - Archives [Free Downloads]

Helsinki based DJ, producer, radio host and all round general nice guy, Samuli Kemppi, has further enhanced his reputation as an all round general nice guy, by giving away some free music.

Archives comprises of a number 0f old unreleased tracks that have been collecting dust on Samuli's hard drive, so what better to do with them, than expose them to the general public? Having already made a name for himself with releases on M_Rec, Mote Evolver, Ostgut Ton, Perc Trax, Prologue, Time To Express and a few more, there's good reason why we rate the man so highly. His performance for us at Slash Dot Dash is still one of the best live sets I've had the pleasure of seeing.

The tracks can be downloaded from the soundcloud player below

By the looks of things there's more free tracks to come so keep looking. Following Samuli on Soundcloud will be your best bet. For everything else you can like his Facebook Fan Page or follow him on Twitter.

If you want to see him perform you can catch him next Friday (23rd March) alongside Delta Funktionen as Deep Space Helsinki take over Kuules Linja for the night. Full event info available on Resident Advisor

Parallel Series 2: Shifted & Samuli Kemppi [Mote Evolver 028]

Mote Evolver drops its first release of 2012 with the second edition of it's Parallel Series. Parallel Series 1 combined Luke Slater's L.B. Dub Corp alias with ASC to create an EP with contrasting, but complimenting, sounds within.

The same rules apply of number 2. The artists in question this time are UK rising star, Shifted and former Slash Dot Dash guest and all round nice guy, Samuli Kemppi. Both display a level of skill and creativity in their work which only goes to show why these two individuals are so respected around the techno community.

Shifted kicks off the release with 'Gates' with it's thundering kick and piercing hats is sure to be a dancefloor destroyer. 'Spire' steps up the intensity, filled with industrial overtones and ghostly wafts of white noise. The flip side hands over to Samuli. 'Trans Neptunian' is driving and tough yet warming and somewhat jacking, whilst 'Detached Object' rounds off the EP with subtle progressions of sparse melodies and sub heavy frequencies as the momentum builds for those epic late night moments. Check out the samples below

The EP is due for release next Monday (20th Feb) and will be found in all the usual places. More info on everyone involved can be found on the relevant Social Media sites

Cassegrain - Coptic EP [Prologue 025]

Cassegrain kick off 2012 with their second release on SDD favourite, Prologue Records. Their first release on the label 'Dropa EP' [PRG021], for us was one of the best releases of the year and got plays in every corner of the techno world.

Prologue 025 reaches the same heights as the pair demonstrate the skills that have made them a hot new property on the techno scene. Full to the brim with harrowing dub influenced rhythms and down right scary atmospherics which would unsettle those of a slightly nervous disposition. All four track encompass the same ventures into experimental techno and mind altering electronic music, which can be found in everything they do. Check out the samples below.

The release will be in the shops towards the end of the month on both vinyl and digital. The Prologue Facebook Fan Page is where you find all you'll need to know about them. Or follow them on Twitter. The same goes for Cassegrain with their Facebook and Twitter.
