Davide Carbone - better known as D.Carbone, class of '87 - is a techno producer since his early days.

His sound is rooted in the visionary decay of society that evolves into an acidic vision of life in general, accompanied by deep drones and glitch sonorities creating the raw and industrial, yet unique sounds.

During the past years, Davide has released on labels like Planet Rhythm, Inner Surface Music, Dynamic Reflection and his own labels called REPITCH and 3TH.

In 2013, he introduced his new moniker "Honzo" that he calls his alter ego. D.Carbone has a keen interest in Human Psychology - therefore the EP's name "D.Carbone meets Honzo in a Biopolar Disorder" which appeared on 3TH Records. Carbone wants to show the world the bipolarity of expression itself and in oneself by using both of his monikers - for the A/B side.

The A-side appears in typical D.Carbone manner, revealing the will to impress with metallic-acidic trips escorted by dramatic ambients and rich bass lines. The B-side represents Honzo as the experimental side of Carbone's music, focussing mainly on futuristic-breakbeats and industrial tones.

Over the years, Carbone established a strong collaboration with Ascion, who is, together with D.Carbone and Shapednoise, the third head behind REPITCH Recordings. D.Carbine is also one of the masterminds in the creation of 3TH Records. Recently, the works of D.Carbone and Ascion have resulted in various aliases such as Repitch and 3TH, that were named after and released on the homonymous labels.

In the future, there will be a lot more to expect from Carbone and his surrounding artists.

In this mix, D.Carbone leads an audio assault with his powerful arsenal of distortion drenched, post apocalyptic industrial techno, which has seen his stock dramatically rise in both the techno and experimental arenas. This obvious talent has served to fit him in the category of one of the most exciting producers around.

Slash Dot Dash Podcast 036: Anetha

A resident of the Blocaus series in Paris, as well as a great collector of vinyl, Anetha is a young artist who has quickly become a prominent figure in the Paris underground scene. Her sets are precise and energetic, traveling flawlessly between hypnotic techno, dub-techno, mental tracks and even acid.

Anetha knows how to take control of a dance floor. A lot of great things are coming soon from her. She is definitely an artist to watch out for. Anetha has supported some of the greatest names in techno from the likes of Chris Liebing, Function, James Ruskin, Oscar Mulero and more, as well as performing at the excellent Weather Festival in her native Paris.

The mix Anetha has provided for our series goes to show just why she's such a rising talent. Driving rhythms evolve with subtle progression interspersed with smatterings of emotion and full on classic rave moments.

Slash Dot Dash Podcast 035: Fluxion

Fluxion (Kostas Soublis) is a Greek producer that has been active for more than 10 years, with 6 full length albums and 12 EP / LP releases on Chain Reaction, Vibrant Music, Resopal and Echocord. His releases have been remixed by Deadbeat, Thomas Fehlmann, Rod Modell, Morphosis and Convextion amongst others. Fluxion's music includes different genres of electronic music, ambient, dub, experimental, techno, with sound design. His music has a characteristic of slowly evolving parts and contemplating elements which form lengthy musical pieces. His sounds are heavily processed to a point where the origin of a sound has little to do with the end result.

Epic in scope with a bit of the clicks & cuts approach synonymous with artists such as Vladislav Delay, much of Fluxion's best Chain Reaction work was compiled on teo Vibrant Forms albums. He went silent for a few years but resurfaced with a somewhat bolder approach on the 2009-2013 releases through Resopal and Echocord. At the end of 2013 Type reissued Fluxion's "Vibrant Forms" with 10 tracls that had been released in 1999 on the legendary Berlin imprint Chain Reaction and 2014 he made his brilliant comeback with releasing a new album (CD + 2LP) called "Broadwalk Tales" on Echocord, featuring the Jamaican vocalist Teddy Selassie.

Naturally, we were delighted to invite Fluxion to join our podcast family, and the mix he has put together perfectly illustrates why he's been one of the top artists in his field for a decade. Oozing lush textures, evolving atmospheres and blissful dub overtones, this mix is one to immerse yourself within it's warming glow.

Slash Dot Dash Podcast 034: UVB

UVB is the pseudonym of the French DJ and producer, Sébastien Michel. He grew up with the passion for music and focused his attention on electronic music in 2011 whine he decided to start producing. In the meantime, he started his DJ project in his home city, Marseille, playing in underground places and delivering his own vision of Techno Music. Late 2012, he worked on several music projects in different styles of electronic music which comforted him in his choice for raw and hard tones.

In 2013, UVB concentrated on his techno project, started to develop his own version of a live which is a DJ set only composed of his own productions, and played it at clubs in Berlin (Urban Spree, Tresor). His first EP was released on the Rotterdam based label MORD Records in June 2014 and has been supported by some of the biggest names of the Techno scene such as Surgeon, Marcel Dettmann, Lucy or even Tommy Four Seven.

UVB's sound combines energetic tones with intricate rhythms, and always focuses on a true rave feeling by it's functionality and it's rawness. This mix, that effortlessly blends techno of varying energy levels whilst maintaining the same tempo, if proof of why he's become one of techno's most hotly tipped rising stars.

Token Records present Aphelion [Token048]

2007 was a strange year for techno. Dancefloors worldwide were hooked by the minimal craze, vinyl sales were in a massive slump, Europe was gripped by widespread recession and Berghain was relatively unknown to those outside of Berlin. With this in mind, if someone told you they were going to start a record label, and press on vinyl, you'd probably have told them that they'd be mad to do so. But Kr!z, driven by a need for an artistic outlet, had other ideas.

Armed with tracks from Inigo Kennedy, Sub Space, Ø Phase and Radial, he pitched his stall and made his statement of a new darker direction that techno could take. Token Records was born and the result was music made for dark basements rather than huge arena's hired by promoter with bottomless production budgets. As the years have rolled by releases from Inigo Kennedy and Ø Phase have continued and spattered amongst them has been EPs from the likes of Oscar Mulero, Go Hiyama, Xhin, Mark Broom and Eschaton as well as the roster additions of Ctrls and Rødhåd, which have been received with critical acclaim from all corners of the techno world and has helped cement the labels position at the forefront of our ever enhancing scene.

As we reach the present day, Token Records present us with 'Aphelion' to serve as a celebration of their achievements to date and as a prelude to what the future looks like for the Belgium imprint. Collecting together label mainstays, techno legends and bright new stars was only going to end in something spectacular, covering the expansive tapestry of sounds that make up what we class as techno. There's no warm up as we're thrown straight into what seems like the Army Ants march to war with Ø Phase's 'Insectoid'. Lucy drops the pace with 'Sana Sana Sana Cura Cura Cura' and his subtle use of modular rhythms before Ctrls ups the ante with the frantic progression of 'X.Y.'

Rødhåd continues the heady vibe with 'Haumea' and it's trippy synth patterns that intertwine with each other in oscillating waves and slowly enslave your subconscious. 'The 808 Track (Parts 1 & 2)', from Luke Slater's Planetary Assault Systems alias, makes tremendous use of the classic 808 sounds that have been a staple of techno since it's inception. The UK techno legend run continues as James Ruskin utilises almost playful, infectiously jacking programming on 'No Trace' and Surgeon showcases his heavily distorted industrial sound on 'Fixed Action Pattern'.

Inigo Kennedy, no less of a UK techno legend himself, mixes heavy kicks and aggressive percussion with emotive lead lines for those late night transcendent moments. Not wanting to go out on a whimper, they've rounded off with one of the most exciting additions to UK techno in the shape of Blawan and Pariah's double act, Karenn, and their 'Pace Yourself' which does anything but. Stabs drenched in reverb overlay gothic bells which perch delicately on top of a relentless 4/4 kick drum to leave you craving more when you reach the final curtain.

If this album is to be a statement of everything that Token Records embodies, then they're definitely going with the attitude of put your strongest foot forward. And what results is a structurally sound fortress of techno that could withstand anything nature, or man, could throw at it. It's solid as the day is long and bound together with quality from every junction. The journey to this point has been a very fruitful one for Token and the future is one that should be observed very closely.

Slash Dot Dash Podcast 033: Van Bonn

Nothing but his real name. The German artist and producer Van Bonn is a true traveller in music and life. After formulating a language of drones, hip-hop, hardcore-metal, instrumental rock and techno, Van Bonn presents his transcriptions of his journey in 2014 and onwards.

Reimut Van Bonn played drums in a hardcore-metal band besides producing hip-hop before he joined the well known German instrumental rock band 'Long Distance Calling' which went Top 40 in the German charts. Van Bonn contributed his deepness to the band's sound by using, manipulating and dubbing various electronic instruments and audio sources. Moreover Van Bonn recorded loads of 'mostly ambient drone stuff', as he says, for his alter ego Kadrage, to be kept safe under his bed. While living in Berlin, Van Bonn started to create his very own cosmos of sounds to transfer all this into techno.

Van Bonn's participation in the dub techno label, Telrae, which he did not only record for and where he is recognised as a soulmate of a collective of 5 people, already established as a tastemaker in this scene. Still a musician on the rise, he gave his debut on his own label Van Bonn Records with the vinyl EP 'Gradient' in April 2013 which was perceived very well with techno DJs, tastemakers and people who just loved music. But it was his EP about skydiver 'Baumgartner', released in October 2013, that was hailed as a masterpiece and which accounted for a small break through in his career.

Now located in Copenhagen, Van Bonn takes a new perspective on techno to travel and ride the waves of sound without ignorance and abuse, he is a human hellfire after all.

It was through his released on Telrae that was first discovered Van Bonn and we've been fans ever since. Traversing the blurred lines of dub and techno, his music very much fits our tastes, and whether it's through his productions or DJ sets, Van Bonn's creative skills are on show for all to admire. The mix is no exception as it draws you in with it's heavy bass, encapsulating rhythms and immersive atmospheres and holds you there until releasing you in the most delicate of fashions.

Slash Dot Dash Podcast 032: TM404

TM404 is the brain child of Swedish producer, and analog legend, Andreas Tilliander. The project, released on Kontra Musik, was a homage to his love of vintage Roland hardware. Using nothing else but two 202s, four 303s, two 606s, a 707 and an 808 he expertly crafted an improvised work of experimental genius. Andreas utilised Roland's x0x series in a fashion unlike anyone else to create of vision of dub techno that's enthralling, relaxing and uplifting all at the same time.

TM404 is just one of a long line of projects under Tilliander's belt. During the last 15 years he's released music ranging from classic dub techno to experimental soundscapes and dubstep to peak time dance floor techno. All this can be found under his own name, as well as the aliases Mokira, Lowfour, Rechord, Komp, Kondens (with Stefan Thor), part of the bands Bulgur Brothers and Skitus and finally his newest project, forth coming on Semantica, Svaag, on esteemed labels such as Raster Noton, Prologue, Echocord, Skudge, Kontra Musik and many more.

The TM404 live show has entertained and impressed audiences worldwide at clubs and festivals like Berghain, Mutek, Culture Box and CTM Festival, and has been a regular at Richie Hawtin's Enter parties at Ibizan super club Space. With new music coming in the next few months, as Svaag on Semantica, as Mokira on SELF and new TM404 material, firstly on Skudge and a TM404 remix pack from Svreca on Kontra Musik, winter is shaping up to be a very exciting time for the Swede, as it is for his fans.

We asked him to join our podcast family and he duly obliged with a TM404 DJ mix that encapsulates all this is Andreas Tilliander. Effortlessly gliding from experimental to acid, to elegant dub techno before venturing into the world of hypnotic techno, touching the fringes of DnB then back to stripped out techno, culminating in a swan song of early 80s dub.

A soundtrack for dark cellars and strobe filled clubs, moulded from a pure and uncut techno template. That's what Darko Esser's Tripeo alter ego is only and all about. His 'Frist Trip' debut at the end of 2012 took the techno scene by storm and received massive support from key figures around the globe. Now that the dust has started to settle down, it has become clear that Tripeo is here to stay.

2013 saw him unleash a relentless schedule including releases & remixes on Theory, BALANS, Pole Group, Deep Sound Channel as well as 4 new vinyl only Trips on his self titled imprint, and 2013 has been blessed with the launch of the first Tripeo album, 'Anipintiros' which has been really well received amongst techno circles and beyond. This podcast features a number of tracks from the LP. Tripeo is a force to be reckoned with on stage as well, as he proved in his machine funk driven live shows as well as tireless hypnotic DJ sets in some of the finest clubs and festivals around.

We're delighted to welcome Tripeo to our podcast family with this tremendous live set. Having witnessed the show n the flesh, we know just how impressive an experience it is, and one you should definitely make a point of capturing for yourself. Slash Dot Dash Podcast 030: Dimi Angelis

When considering his status as a beloved and respected member of the contemporary Amsterdam techno scene, it's sometimes easy to forget Dimi Angelis was among the founding members of the very culture that helped shape it. Promoting illegal raves and warehouse parties and puting his first needle on a record back when 'underground' was still a definable term. Dimi now holds well over a decade of international DJ-ing experience. I shouldn't come as a surprise then that this is directly reflected by his record collection, musical knowledge and technical ability which all easily match, and in most cases, surpass that of many.

Such an extensive frame of reference enables Dimi to look at 'techno' through a unique and highly personal lens. Well aware of the genres fluid boundaries, ever changing trends and the impact of continually developing technology, Dimi is able to elegantly step outside of the pre-determined fabric and in a sense mould it's essential elements into something that feels familiar but upon more careful observation, or rather listening, is actually quite special.

Putting personality and outspoken taste first, his DJ sets are always remarkable and at no point predictable, more so because he does not believe in easy pleasing/ Strongly opinionated and unafraid to speak on his thoughts, the records and flow incorporated in a Dimi Angelis set are equally straightforward and honest. What you see is in Dimi's case really what you get, but it always comes wrapped in something appropriately unexpected.

In 2003 he joined forces with good friend Jeroen Search and together they have since launched multiple successful projects including outstanding live acts 'Counterpart' and 'Dimi Angelis and Jeroen Search' as well as their own newly founded vinyl only imprint, 'A&S'. Under the first mentioned guise of Counterpart they are responsible for lauded EP's such as 'Ion' 01 and 02 on the sub-label of Rachmad's Scorp of the same name, 'Oxygenating; and 'The Next Level' on Audiosculpture and 'The Martian Mystique' on Jeff Mills' Mission (6277/Axis). More recently they have put out characteristic quality techno on their own A&S label, Balans, Stockholm Ltd, Smallville, Figure SPC and Traut as simply Dimi Angelis and Jeroen Search. 2014 sees the launch of ANGLS, Dimi's first imprint, to release his own material. With the first EP dropping in the next few weeks, this will act as the platform where he can represent the throbbing, hypnotic sound of Dimi Angelis.

Dimi's list of played clubs and festivals is nothing short of respectably long and includes Awakenings, Kozzmozz, Tresor, Rex, Berghain, Doornroosje, Paradiso, Dekmantel, Welcome To The Future, Free Your Mind, Rockit, Mysteryland, Club One, Stubnitz and even the late Innercity. Clearly deeming this list to be far from long enough however, Dimi's set on doing in the future what he's always done and still does best, play great techno, make you move your feet until they're sore and give you a little something to smilingly contemplate.

Naturally we say this about all our podcasts, but this addition from Dimi really is something a little but special. When searching through some old boxes he discovered a bunch of old CDs, on of which contained a recording, from 9 years ago, of Dimi Performing on he infamous East German transport vessel come nightclub, the MS Stubnitz. This power house of a mix just goes to show how long Dimi has been at the forefront of the techno sound that he helped develop in his home country. And even though it was captured in 2005 it still sounds just as forward thinking and fresh now as it undoubtedly did then.

Slash Dot Dash Podcast 029: Mike Parker

Mike Parker lives and works in Buffalo, New York. When he is not twisting analogue frequencies in the studio, he lectures Fine Art at the State University of New York, in Buffalo.

Over the years, his education in the visual arts has had a profound impact on the music he produces. His production style is as uncompromising as his DJ sets are powerful: a track is rehearsed many times, then recorded live on mostly analogue gear with no edits or overdubbing later. His DJ sets have the same spontaneous bite.

His main output has been on his own Geophone label, on which he has released to date nineteen unrelenting, throbbing techno cuts, remixed (very rarely) by the likes of Donato Dozzy & Woody McBride. Mike's other releases include recordings for Prologue Records, Orange Groove, Labyrynth & Dozzy Records. His 2013 album 'Lustrations' on Prologue was met with widespread critical acclaim from all corners of the techno world for it's minimalistic take on contemporary techno. Strong mixes, like that for mmml ssgs, have further increased the devote following to his tight and power DJ sets and have helped him perform all over the planet.

For his addition to our podcast series Mike has compiled a mix that becomes very much an other worldly experience. Right from the start waves of audible emotion begin to lap at your feet, with ever growing intensity, until eventually they completely surround and smother you in their warm, uplifting glow. Come the end you find your mind transported to somewhere very far from where your body happens to be in reality.

Originally from Toronto, Canada, Mary Velo got involved in music at an early age. It wasn't till the 80's where she discovered Depeche Mode and got attracted to deep & moody sounds. In 2007, Mary Velo moved to Berlin where she got strongly influenced in the Deep House & Techno scene.

With a creditable discography which includes releases on labels such as Frozen Border, Semantica, Gynoid Audio and Coincidence, Mary has proven that hard work gets you somewhere.

Mary Velo's releases have gotten rave reviews from sites and magazines such as Resident Advisor, Groove, Fabric, FACT, Little White Earbuds, De:Bug, Juno & Boomkat. Her tracks have also been played and charted by Silent Servant, Function, James Ruskin, Ben Sims, Rebekah, Brendon Moeller, Edit Select, Dominik Eulberg, Toby Tobias & ROD, which has brought Mary to the list of new upcoming techno talents. Her track "Detune" (out on Frozen Border Minutes In Ice comp) was also featured in Sandwell District's fabric 69 mix cd.

Mary Velo has played in highly respected events & clubs such as Berghain, Tresor & Tomorrowland 2013 doing both Live sets and DJ sets.

Mary's been on our radar for quite some time now and we're delighted that she wanted to be part of our podcast family. Pär Grindvik, or his pseudonym The Hollow, has been a core person of the Swedish electronic scene since the nineties as a record-store owner (Illegal Stockholm), label manager and producer. He is a well established artist and has been touring for many years and releases on big name labels like Drumcode, Spectral Sound, Saved Records and his own label Stockholm Ltd, which he created and founded in 2002.

Stockholm Ltd began as an outlet for singles and Eps from Swedish electronic artists with a focus on releasing timeless electronic music. Nowadays it's much more, as each release tells it's own story. Pär also founded the sub label Islands & Islets in 2008. Every inch of Pär's work, including the labels, artwork, release info and music, is wrapped with heart and emotion, which keeps the sparkle and curiosity alive within the ever changing adaptations of the artists world.

Thus, Pär Grindvik is one of the most promising names around today and one of the most respected producers out there! With this in mind, Pär was an artist that we felt had to be part of the Slash Dot Dash Podcast family. He asked us the brief and we simply told him "do what you feel". And what resulted is a rare downtempo home listening mix from the Swede.

All the heart and emotion, that's the benchmark of everything he does, is present in this glorious 70 minute excursion into landscapes of sound, that touch you on the deepest of levels. So sit back and immerse yourself in this expansive mix that traverses from ambient textures to late night head nodders and bass heavy sonic attacks to raw hip hop beats in the most elegant of fashions.

Slash Dot Dash Podcast 026: Felix K

After the huge success of our celebratory 25th edition, we're not ones to rest on our laurels. So naturally following 25 comes 26. We stay in the same city as we move from a British ex-pat now living in Berlin to a Berlin native in the shape of Felix K.

Felix K is a DJ and Producer from Berlin and the visionary behind the labels '0000', 'Hidden Hawaii', 'Gilga', 'QNS', 'Sub' and 'Solaris Series'. His DJ career goes all the way back to 1997, when he started as a DnB DJ. 2007 turned out to be the year he stopped collecting DnB records in favour of Techno and House.

Although you can certainly recognise an immense inter text of inspirations that spans from music and movies to art and architecture, Felix's production output is hard to pinpoint to any specific musical genre. When listening to his music, out's hard not to appreciate the way he filters his inspirational input into unique moody and dubby music.

In 2012 he joined of the most exciting collectives of recent times, as he became part of the now infamous Dystopian booking agency. He's since performed at the likes of Berghain and Corsica Studios as well as a small tour of Japan last month. In 2013 his debut album, 'Flowers Of Destruction' was released though his Hidden Hawaii label and met with worldwide critical acclaim. Spanning the realms of techno, DnB and ambient experimentalism, the whole piece was a homage to Felix's wealth of highly varied inspiration.

Felix's abilities as a producer, and the aspects that make his music of such interest, transpose directly into his DJ sets. All the subtle intricacies, the attention to detail and the full force of deep hypnotic techno are there to be absorbed and admired, as he transports you into an intense world of encapsulating rhythms, removing you from a place of cease and comfort and dropping you into a sparse slowly evolving landscape. Unable to break the lock it has over your attention, you have no choice but to allow it to consume you and, come the end, you feel nothing but reward for doing so.

Slash Dot Dash Podcast 024: Stefan Gubatz

Stefan Gubatz is an electronic music producer living in Cologne / Germany. After a few years experimenting with lots of different styles he found a home at the newly founded Traum Schallplatten sub label, Telrae, where he released a couple of 10 Inches, mostly dub techno oriented. His debut LP 'Distanz', which went even deeper into wide atmospheric soundscapes was released in late 2012, accompanied by two 'reworks' of his album on 10".

While becoming older and even lazier than before (as he claims), Stefan is always looking for new frontiers in sound, not only concentrating on dub techno but trying out new styles and experiments.

For our 24th Podcast Stefan has compiled music, new and old, to transport you into a world of downtempo experimental sounds that drift you through distorted clicks, saturated synth patterns and heady intense beats. This is by far our most out there mix, designed for home listening rather than warming you up for a big night out, as Stefan demonstrates his ability to manipulate your emotions of state of mind with every passing moment.

Slash Dot Dash Podcast 023: Jeff Derringer, plus an exclusive interview

Jeff Derringer is a producer, performer, event promoter and educator based in Chicago. He is the resident and creative director of the Oktave project, which puts on events in both Chicago and New York.

Jeff's first EP came out on New York's Subtrak Label in the summer of 2010. He has since released three EPs on renowned UK label Perc Trax and a collaboration with Droid Behavior's Raiz on Speedy J's Electric Deluxe.

The Oktave project was started by Jeff, and partner Kevin Gregor, in New York in 2009. November 2010 saw the first Oktave show in Chicago. Past guests include Function, Claro Intelecto, Traversable Wormhole, Cio D'or, Donato Dozzy, Silent Servant, Dasha Rush, Mike Parker, Lucy and many more.

We invited Jeff to become part of our ever growing Slash Dot Dash Podcast family and he was more than happy to get involved. The outcome is a tough, uncompromising combination of US and European techno sounds blended together with his indisputable technical ability.

As well as the mix, Jeff was kind enough to answer a few questions for us....

1) How has your summer been?

My summer has been productive and I even got to relax a little bit. I've been finishing some records and doing some mixes (yours included), and I've actually done a little remix work. I don't do very many remixes as I don't want to take too much time away from my original productions, but every once in a while it's nice to work on someone else's stuff

2) How has this mix been put together?

I perform in Ableton Live and Maschine. I always record a mix live, straight through, and then go back and listen to what I've done. If I like it, I will do some basic editing to make sure it can stand up to repeat listens. I try to keep it organic so it's not overtly a 'studio' mix. I'm a total perfectionist when it comes to music, but I do my best to back off of that when I'm doing a podcast mix - I want it to have as much of the improvisational, 'in the moment' feel as possible. So what you're hearing on this mix is a 60 minute recording that I performed in my studio, with minor edits for continuity. 

3) Next Month sees the 4th Anniversary of your Oktave parties. What have been your highlights since the project's inception?

There have been so many highlights at Oktave, it's hard to isolate just a few. I know that sounds very clichéd. One of the most exciting shows was the one we did in NYC with Cio D'or and Traversable Wormhole - we did that at National Underground, which is a very small space, and it was mobbed. It was almost dangerously crowded and it was in the summer, so very sweaty. There was a feeling in the place that the roof might cave in at any moment, so there was an urgency to the night that really made it stand out.

Last summer we had Chris Liebing at Smartbar in Chicago, and that show was very fun and electric. It was one of the first times in Chicago where I looked out at the crowd and thought, 'wow, they're starting to get it.' Chris was a gentleman and a great showman, and there was just a strong energy in the room that night. Lots of new Oktave fans from that show.

Most recently, we did a Perc Trax showcase in Detroit for the opening night of Movement. We had a really great turnout again, there was tremendous energy in the club (The Works). That was the first time we had done anything at Movement, so there were some nerves going on. Would it work? It worked. Great line up, great people, a really nice kick off to a big weekend of techno.

4) You started Oktave in New York but have since migrated to Chicago. Why the change of location and what have the implications of that change been?

We started Oktave in October of 2009. At that point, I had been living in New York for nearly 17 years. I love New York and always will, but after that much time I was starting to get burned out. I'm a Midwesterner at heart. The timing wasn't ideal, but the spring of 2010 I decided to leave and go back to Chicago (my hometown).

Initially I thought about stopping Oktave, as we of course had the growing pains of any event series and had lost money on some early, more ambitious shows. But then I reconsidered the situation and decided that perhaps there was an opportunity to bring our sound to Chicago. There are a lot of great techno events in New York highlighting the artists that represent the Oktave sound, but no such event was happening in Chicago. So I moved in July 2010, and we had our first event at Smartbar in November of that year.

In 2011 and 2012, we did events in both cities. This was exciting but very difficult to maintain, as the costs of my travel to New York were prohibitive, and it was difficult for me to stay on top of things with everything else I have going on. In 2013 we've focused exclusively on Chicago, as the techno scene here has a much greater need for what we do. This is not to say that Oktave is finished in New York, but I guess right now we're just taking an NYC hiatus.

5) You teach audio production in Chicago. What's that like?

Soon after I moved back to Chicago, I started teaching audio production at Columbia College Chicago, a great Arts school in the South Loop. I currently teach a curriculum that focuses heavily on club music production. We focus on Maschine and Ableton Live, as well as the mixing and finishing process, which gets us into Logic. In the Intro class, we also look at the history of dance music, including Northern Soul, Dub, Disco, Garage, Hip Hop, House, Techno and beyond.

Teaching is very gratifying and a great compliment to what I do as a producer, performer and event curator. The kids are all excited about the production process and they're hungry to learn. I don't think there's too many opportunities for the students to get this type of class outside of the college, so they value the time they spend with me. As a teacher, that's a luxury and it makes teaching really really easy. Give me kids who are interested and looking to absorb as much information as possible - they're a pleasure to teach.

6) You mentioned that you perform in Ableton and Maschine. Is this the same software you use to produce? What's your production process like? Lastly, what do you have coming up as far as releases are concerned?

Yes, I produce in Ableton and Maschine, and I do my mixdowns and finishing in Logic. I mentioned I'm a perfectionist - this comes to fruition during my studio sessions. As far as production goes, I'm probably on the slower side of the spectrum. I take my time with tracks and I don't like to rush through the process. This slows down my release output and perhaps slows down my overall career, but I'm happy to be patient. If I am working on a two or three track EP, I will likely put together 20 or more ideas, and eliminate many of them before they get to the mixdown stage. I work faster when i have a deadline, but generally I like to take my time and live with a track for a while before considering it a finished product.

I see some producers pumping a lot of material, with a remix or an EP hitting the market every month or so. While this works for some, I'm not a fan of that strategy. When I was growing up, my favourite artists put out a new record every couple of years or so. I realize that things are much faster paced now and  you can't really sustain a career, especially in techno, putting out material every two years. However, I like for an artist's work to feel special, like they spent time on it. I carry that same philosophy over to my own productions.

That said, I do have some new stuff coming out that I'm excited about. Later this year I will release an EP on Prosthetic Pressings. I'm happy about that because I've been collaborating with Prosthetic Pressings on events in Chicago, and it makes a lot of sense to put out a new record with them. PP is also Chicago based, which makes it all the more special for me. My relationship with Presthetic and their main man Sean Sanders has been instrumental in establishing Oktave in Chicago.

After that, I will release my second EP on Electric Deluxe, Speedy J's excellent label based in Holland. I've been a huge EDLX fan from the beginning, and having the opportunity to put out my music with them is humbling and gratifying. I love their design aesthetic and their roster, and I play a lot of their music in my sets. I feel like that's important. Also having a legend like Jochem support and release my work is beyond all my expectations, to be honest. In April, Jochem brought me to Berghain to be a part of the EDLX showcase, which was my first European gig. Obviously, I'm very fortunate to be given those kinds of opportunities.
